Hello and welcome to that TV Comedy Podcast. I'm Amanda Davies and my co-host is J` Srah. For each episode we will be taking a look at a television comedy series, breaking it down with a focus on a specific episode, giving it a bit of a deep dive, geeking out about it and generally discussing it. We'll be taking it in turns to pick a series, so it may not be something we've seen this week. It's my choice and it's Colin from Accounts. Why do you pick Colin from Accounts, mand? I picked Colin from Accounts because, basically, it's named after a dog and I love dogs. Oh, that's a good reason. Joking aside, I think this is a great series. It's clever and I thought it would be really good to include something that's newer. Yeah, and of course this is Australian. We haven't actually talked about any australian comedy drama, no, okay, or any australian sitcoms, bear in mind.
Speaker 1:In the uk we've only seen the one season of it. I know it's been on in australia and new zealand and other places, but in the uk all we know is it's going to be on bbc and it's going to be on iplayer. We're recording this a week before it's published, so it's not even months before, so if it suddenly gets released next week on bbc. When did they record that we were causing this? A week before. So, man, I think you've been potentially being quite sneaky about this one. And why would you say that? When did you tell me we were doing calling from accounts? Oh right, I can't really make up my mind about things. Often, as you're very well aware, I take a long time to reach a decision. However, once I actually get to a decision, I am dead set on it then, and this is general for my whole life. Okay, but when did you decide to do calling from accounts?
Speaker 1:we're recording this on a saturday what day did you tell me we were doing this was?
Speaker 1:it monday or tuesday yeah and what day did you tell me which episode we were doing? Was that thursday? And how much time have I had to do all this? Who's who's currently on holiday and who's currently not on holiday? It's a good job. There's only half an hour of the show. It was a little bit naughty, however, because this was episode 10 and potentially the last one. Well, it is the last one of this season. Yes, I wanted it to be something a little bit different, but I couldn't decide what and I didn't want to get into the whole Leslie Knope, ron Swanson thing again with you yeah because it's no point, because Leslie Knope will win, because Leslie Knope will win Ron Swanson is the best.
Speaker 1:So, rather than half an hour of that sort of discussion, or Little Sebastian, I thought we'd go something different. How many weeks before recording did I give you the Frasier episode? Maybe two, three weeks, probably closer to four, maybe. So all I'm saying is that I've had very little time to look into this and I have not had time to re-watch the series. And that's okay, because, in theory, amanda could have given me an episode of something I haven't watched the series of. I mean, like you've kept doing to me, yeah, with lots of warning, I've never said you can only watch that one episode, I know, but for example, in the very first one, the Office.
Speaker 2:So many years.
Speaker 1:I gave you weeks of episodes, so many years of episodes. You watched a whole season of that. Don't get defensive. You're trying to make me look bad. I'm not, so I haven't had time to watch the whole of this series again since telling me about this, so I might be lost a bit. I might be asking questions. Okay, good luck with that. Yeah, amanda, tell us about Calling From Accounts. Calling From Accounts, calling From Accounts is an Australian Romantic Dramedy Drama comedy.
Speaker 2:I don't like that phrase.
Speaker 1:I'd say a dramatic comedy Comedy with drama. Television series of now 16 episodes, created and written by Husband and wife team Patrick Brammell and Harriet Dyer, who also star as the show's main characters.
Speaker 1:They're called Gordon and Ashley there, however, alongside the actor Zach, who plays Colin the Border Terrier. It's set in Sydney, australia, and produced by Easy Tiger Productions and CBS Studios for Foxtel. The first episode was aired on the 1st of December 2022 in Australia on the streaming service Binge yeah. The show aired on BBC Two in the UK and streams on the BBC iPlayer, which it still does. Season two has recently finished airing in Australia, as you mentioned, and whilst the BBC has confirmed, the show will return to BBC Two at the time of recording the date of the UK showing is yet to be announced.
Speaker 1:Rude. The series has been critically acclaimed and was nominated for numerous awards in 2023. Yeah, its wins include the 2023 Australian Academyian academy of cinema and television arts awards best narrative comedy series award and three logies. Imdb summarizes the program as centered on ashley and gordon, two single-ish, complex humans who are brought together by a car accident and an injured dog. Flawed funny people choosing each other and being brave enough to show their true self, scars and awe as they navigate life together. The series receives an overall rating at the time of recording of 8.1. Okay, that's quite decent for a new programme. Yeah, absolutely for a new show. And I suppose that also it includes Season 2, because obviously people who have seen it in Australia, new Zealand, wherever have had the opportunity to rate Season 2 episodes as well. So, yeah, it's a romantic drama comedy.
Speaker 1:I just thought it was a little bit different and something that we could discuss and what I really liked about it. For example, in the first episode, within the first five minutes before, you don't really hear anybody speak. It set up the whole thing. What you need to know. Yeah, it's out there, gordon getting up for the day, colin first of all being let out of his owner's gate by the post or a delivery man, by accident, and wandering the street, ashley getting upset, trying to text her ex-boyfriend she's obviously being dumb. She's eating and then realizes she has to go to the hospital for safety training and she's crossing the road. She flashes gordon and he accidentally then runs over poor colin. It's a brilliant opening, but I didn't want to choose the first episode, no, so that we'd have a bit more character development to talk about. But I thought it's one of the best first episodes of a series generally Okay.
Speaker 2:I don't disagree, by the way, because it just sets it all out.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but you think, as a pilot goes, it's one of the most successful you've ever seen? Definitely, because quite often these shows are slow burners, aren't they? Yeah, it's hard to pilot, it's really hard, Whereas within five minutes it's all set up. No, it is. What do you think of the series Jess? No, I love Colin. I think I recommended Colin from accounts to you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think you did To watch.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, I really enjoyed it. It's a grown-up comedy and we're going to have to be careful of what we say on here because there is adult themes and strong language, as my other podcast Excuse the Jess says every episode, but this podcast does not have swearing and we've got to steer quite away from adult themes. But if you trust me personally, all that stuff is right up my street. Welcome to the show. The episode of Colin from Accounts I've Chosen is obviously from the first season and it's episode 3, toyota Cressida. This episode receives an IMDb rating of 7.9 at the time of recording. Yeah, I think it's a bit better than that. Actually, I enjoyed it.
Speaker 1:I thought it was a good episode, even though it's got some very upsetting themes yeah, but it actually says so much about life, all contained in a half hour program, and they're able to do it. The sadness, as we discussed if you can't make me cry, you can't make me laugh. This is the whole spectrum. Yeah, in this episode, what I like about these episodes as well, and the whole season. Each episode begins with an acknowledgement. Yes, we acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which this programme was produced. We pay our respects to all First Nations people and acknowledge elders, past and present. A lot of shows do that now in Australia, quite rightly, absolutely, podcasts do it as well if they are australian podcasts. Just to try and redress the balance anyway. The opening scene yes, it's breakfast pre-titles. I like this. We have pre-titles on this series breakfast and breakfast they acknowledge it's nice it's nice.
Speaker 1:And then gordon asks Colin, is this nice? And Colin gives him a paw. Yeah, it's a bit awkward, isn't it? Because they're not really that comfortable with each other yet? No, and in the previous episode, ash has accidentally gone to the toilet in his bedside drawer while she's half asleep.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:All of that embarrassment and she buys him a new one, and they don't really talk about it, but they both acknowledge it. So this is the next sort of day or a couple of days later. So it is awkward, but they're not a couple at this stage. They're not a couple. No, they've been thrown together because of the dog, because Ashley has had to leave her shared house, because of Colin and because Gordon wouldn't take Colin. He doesn't want full responsibility for the dog. No, he's running his own business. That's right, and he's already shelled out $12,000. Yeah, it's frightening, isn't it? I like this conversation. Gordon says how Colin is a really smart dog and Ash says most dog owners say that, yeah, and I'm thinking yeah, they do they really smart dog and ash says most dog owners say that, yeah, and I'm saying, yeah, they do, they absolutely do.
Speaker 1:And then she accuses him of becoming a weird dog person. Yeah, this is so the person I would be if I had a dog.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he was yeah and then they move on to discussing how it's like being a married couple and joking about like an old couple. They're happy. Now the kids have left. Yeah, because they didn't really like him. Yeah, so Gordon says he's got an appointment that day and Ash asks him and he says it's iron levels or something. Yeah, but of course she's a medical student. So she starts delving a bit deeper. Yeah, and he says he doesn't want to use long words, he doesn't understand. At the breakfast table great, but ash does want to use his ute. She needs to collect her things from tyler, her old flatmate. She's had to leave because of colin, but he's threatening to sell her things. So they have a few jokes about murdering each other. It's funny. They like each other but they don't really know each other and a little bit awkward.
Speaker 1:Yeah, ash goes and gordon is having a bath, but it's okay, we don't see anything yet and he's looking at scary medical stuff on his phone. He wants to find out about the, what he's gonna have done at the doctor's. Colin jumps up at the bath and Gordon's oh, that's so cute takes a picture of it and he sends it. He did so, we're missing you. And then he settles down in the bath, doesn't he? And then all of a sudden he sort of stops, picks up the phone again, he realises that he's actually included a little bit too much of himself in the photograph and panics, drops the phone in the bath. He tries to get out of the bar, falls over, yeah, falls out the bath, and it's a disaster. And then we have the opening titles. What do you think of the opening titles for colin and kaz?
Speaker 2:it's so odd isn't it?
Speaker 1:it's very strange, but it's pictures of them and they're young, I take it, but then they're dogs or a dog. There's lots of dogs in the opening titles, but I like the old-fashioned music reminds me a bit of zoe sunny in philadelphia. That music that it's all nice, it's nice and it's it feels like it's gentle it's nostalgic in a way.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we go back to Ash. Then, yeah, and Tyler is having a sale of her things on the street no, that's awful. Yeah, and she's looking for her shoes. She's trying to stop people taking her things. And then somebody's going off with their bike. Yeah, and Tyler's shouting quick, ride away. This is vile. She needed a day to sort the dog out, so I guess she's behind on a rent, is she? I think that was the thing as well, and Tyler wants his sister to move in.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but that's still illegal, unless it was never legal. She moved in in the first place. I don't know. We cut back to Colin, who's on the the bathroom floor asking Siri to delete the picture, which she can't do when Kira calls from the brewery to let him know of the review coming out online and then in print the next day, and that they need a quote about what he's hoping to achieve. Yeah, so Beckett is the name of the reviewer, isn't it to achieve? Yeah, so Beckett is the name of the reviewer, isn't it? And he's judging Echo Park, which is the name of the microbrewery that Gordon owns, and then he asks about what's the vibe?
Speaker 2:The vibe, the vibe.
Speaker 1:And she says she doesn't think it's good.
Speaker 1:No. So whilst he's chatting, I'm still panicking about what he's done. Ash rings, she hasn't seen the photo. No, she's got a lot going on. She just needs help. Yeah, she needs help to stop her selling her stuff. But she's got the bike back. But now she's found that her mattress is Some. Yeah, somebody's trying to take her mattress a salesy man. She tries to get it back. Don't worry, help is on the way. Her mother and saying are you stealing from the elderly? The thing is she knows about the sale. Yeah, she knows Tyler's selling her stuff Because she explained she's Facebook friends with Tyler and saw her furniture. So obviously she's paid for this furniture anyway. And then she goes on to say, oh, tyler's bipolar and I message him are you okay? Every day, yeah, and then she decides to go and speak to him to get the furniture back. She sorts it out. Yeah, she does.
Speaker 1:Yeah, in fairness, I don't know what to make of the mother. I know it ramps up a bit in later episodes and that's why God be careful, because on this episode I feel a bit sorry for her. Yeah, she's trying to get in on Ash's life, yeah, but at the same time she sounds quite lonely and she wants people to look out for her that's the way she's looking out for other people, ash says. She says I know a lot of my friends have died. And ash says no, you look for people who are dying.
Speaker 1:Yes, to make friends with, she needs to be needed. Basically, yes, so yeah, in this episode you can feel a little bit, although you think, oh, she's a little bit much, oh gosh, she's so much. Yeah, and, as you say in later episodes, you realize why. Yeah, ash is the way she is. Yeah, because her mother is just bizarre. She is yeah, gordon arrives. Then gordon arrives yeah, he's guessed what's happening. Yeah, and comes up with the idea, quick thinking here. So, flash, they should photograph the stuff, yeah, and asks for her phone. Give me your phone.
Speaker 2:I'll photograph it.
Speaker 1:So she says no, and then he says I'll call the cops. Can I use your phone to call them? Very good, no, but then then Ash's mum has sorted it. Yeah, she gives him something like $260 and a dinner something, and Ash says, no, it's fine, gordon's helping me. And then she starts flirting with him. Yeah, but she says to him you're more in my swimming pool and I was looking at it thinking I think she might be. So what we haven't discussed is there's an age gap between the characters of Ash and Gordon. Yeah, and that becomes more apparent as the series goes on. Now Ash and Gordon, obviously Patrick Cramwell and Harriet Dyer are married in real life. Yeah, I don't think the age gap is as big as it is in the programme. I can't quite remember.
Speaker 1:I think she's supposed to be in her late 20s. She has her 30th birthday later in the series. And they say they don't give an age for him. But you know that he's supposed to be in his 40s.
Speaker 2:Yes, about mid-40s, something like that.
Speaker 1:So, there is an age which, in real life, is 12 or 13 years.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:So it's not as big as the age gap. Yeah, perhaps they're saying, unless they're trying to say he's in his early 40s, then I don't know. Anyway, there's an age gap. No, but there is an age gap and it's quite pronounced when it's a birthday and they have the party in.
Speaker 1:Echo Park and they realise they're in different stages of their lives. Have the party in Echo Park and they realise they're in different stages of their lives. Whilst Ash's mum is flirting with Flash Gordon, Ash gets a message. Oh, by the way, it's completely inappropriate. Her mum is flirting, even if they were in the same pool. No, and we know that she's with somebody as well. We already know that. So we know that it's completely inappropriate that her mum's flirting.
Speaker 1:So at this stage you're thinking that perhaps a mem's not a particularly well person. Yeah, you know, there's something amiss there. You shouldn't be flirting with somebody your daughter's interested in, or even your daughter's friend. Oh, totally no, totally not. Because she's not even saying that this is her boyfriend or anything.
Speaker 2:No, that's true.
Speaker 1:She's presenting him as a friend, and is that the conversation he has with her, saying you're sleeping with my daughter and you don't even know her surname, and he's like I'm not sleeping?
Speaker 2:with her.
Speaker 1:Yes yeah, exactly. Whilst all this goes on, Ash gets a message to say that Peggy Meggle's grandmother which was our grandmother's name, yeah, meggles' grandmother, which was our grandmother's name, yes, yeah, has taken a turn and she's dying and asking Ash to go, yeah, and then her mother says I'll go, I'm a death doula. Yeah, and this is what you were saying earlier. No, you keep making friends with people who are dying. That's different. Yeah, she said Gordon's going.
Speaker 1:She asked Gordon to follow her yeah, with colin and says she'll text the address he's no, don't use the phone I'll follow you. Ash tells tyler not to sell any more of her stuff as her mum has paid. Yeah, and what does he do? Flips the finger at her horrible man. So we get to the house Peggy's, peggy's house and we find out that Meggles is adopted. Peggy thinks that Gordon is James, which is Ash's ex-boyfriend.
Speaker 2:Who dumped her?
Speaker 1:horribly. Yeah, of nearly two years as well, so it was quite a long relationship. And when he says her name's Gordon, she says how horrible. You get to a stage where you're like, nah, I'll say what I want now. Yeah, I don't think our man was much that way.
Speaker 1:Oh she was yeah, totally. Gordon tries to leave and say he'll come back later for Colin Ash then realises that she's got a text from Gordon Finally and they argue over opening it. Yeah, and then he pulls it, and then she drops it on Peggy's chest and she gasps, yeah, and you're like, oh, my gosh yeah. Because Meg? What do they call her Maggie?
Speaker 2:Meggles, meggles, that's it. Her name's Megg, but they call her Meggles, don't they?
Speaker 1:Meggles left the room. Yeah, at this point. But he does actually come clean, gordon. Oh yeah, he says it's a mistake and he explains what happened, but she doesn't realise it. And then she looks at it and she laughs because she show it to peggy. Yeah, this is good and he's apologizing because it's a bad angle, foreshortening, foreshortening water problem.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it was the angle it's making him seem smaller than he is, and if he was sending a bit a picture and he has, it'd be better. Oh, begging walks in, it's that dig, dig. Yeah, she walks in at that moment. He's the last part, yeah. And then he leaves saying I'm so sorry, maggie Peggles, meggles, and yeah, he has to go to the doctors. Yeah, and more serious as well. So we've got from getting the furniture back to the seriousness of Peggy's passing away.
Speaker 1:And now he's having to go to the doctor to have a procedure just to check because he's had testicular cancer previously and the increased risk is to other areas. They make this joke, urethra franklin. Yeah, it's just sticking a pencil up your urethra, franklin it's an old guy in it watching golf and making inappropriate jokes and complimenting Mrs.
Speaker 1:I think they have to wrote that because, honestly, he's already had his foreshortening bit and he's like, right, I'm not having that going on. I want somebody to mention how spectacular I am. I think you're probably right. So, as the doctor's going in, oh yeah, he suddenly says oh no, and then, as you would, you'd think there was something wrong. And then he says, idiot's in the bunker, he's watching the golf. Still. He finishes the examination, but he's got a stern warning no intercourse, nope, no masturbation. Nope, no erections. It's the golden rule. Back to Peggy's house. Back to Peggy's, and they're drinking brandy, because it's any minute now, because the palliative care been in, yeah, and it's silent. And so Gordon picks up on the atmosphere there and says to Mel so she showed you the photo there, yeah, yeah. And so we've got this foreshortening discussion again. But it was a nice distraction, yeah. And then she asks about the pub, and then he has to correct and say actually it's microbrewery.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and I've just emailed a journalist about it.
Speaker 1:He gets so animated by it and Ash is like you know, stop it. I mean, the journalist ordered cider. Yeah, he ordered cider and he's got a real bee in his bonnet about it, yeah, and then peggy starts to say it's now. Oh, yeah, I know.
Speaker 2:And then go on.
Speaker 1:You can say her final, what did she say she said don't let the japs in, which I think is the equivalent over here was don't let the boats in. It would be something like that. Yeah, and then, oh, michael's dad, bernie, arrives. It's too late, he's missed her, he's just missed her, but he asks did?
Speaker 2:she say anything.
Speaker 1:And everyone's like no, she didn't say anything.
Speaker 2:Which is the right thing to say.
Speaker 1:Yeah, because, it's a horrible thing to say so. Bernie calls Gordon James, not James. And when corrected, the right thing to say yeah, because it's a horrible thing to say so, bernie calls gordon james. And when corrected. He apologizes and then he starts complimenting, asking about his lovely toyota crescida out the front yeah, the 1978 car. And then they decide they have to leave.
Speaker 1:It's not appropriate he starts getting upset, as you would think. And then, as they're leaving, randalin, what does he say to Ash? I don't remember, thank your mum for the lift from the airport. Oh, yes, outside. They decide to go for a beer because they've been through a lot. Ash says in the brewery clothes, and he says it's all right, I sleep with the owner, yeah, because I just say something. But he quickly qualifies it, doesn't he? Because he's like oh, I'm saying that, oh, no, that's probably not going to land.
Speaker 2:So I better correct that quickly.
Speaker 1:So yeah, and then who pops up? Ashley's mum, lynette Lynelle, that's it Saying that she felt the passing a few minutes ago. Ashley has to admit it's inappropriate for her being there. It is, yeah. And what did she say about Bernie? Well, she plays Farmville with Bernie. So I reached out, sue me, oh, my goodness. And then she says to Gordon, I've added you on Facebook, don't leave me hanging. You, naughty, naughty boy. Ash says it's weird, yeah, and she keeps telling her to leave, but she says she's going to go in. She wants to go in, pretending to look in her bag, waiting for them to go because she's going to go in. And they turn to go in the car and then she sees her mother trying to go round the back. Yeah, oh, my gosh. And then she says bye, miss Steinhardt. And Ash says who's that? That's how she's given her name. Yeah, so they're at the brewery and they talk about seeing someone die. Yeah, ash says most people die alone Waiting for the doctor to go out, they wait for the doctor to leave and then go.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's interesting. I don't know if that's true or not, but people, they often say you just missed them, yeah. So I think a lot of people do make that choice. There we go. They have a discussion about the beer in the barrel stand, you know, just to try and lighten it slightly. Yeah, a nerdy conversation and then the review's in. Yeah, so he thinks he's going to get roasted, so he can't look.
Speaker 2:Which is handy for us as a viewer. Yeah, he's going to read it out for us.
Speaker 1:Yeah, very good, but she says she can't read. And then he says Stop messing around, I'm a really good reader actually In year three.
Speaker 1:Just read it and she starts to read something about Old pubs being out of date and then new pubs like Echo Park. So it's a good. It's a good review and Gordon is thrilled yeah, or, gordon's alive. So they heard, congratulations, sit back down. Real talk time. So she asks him why do women do this? Why are you single? Why do you think you're single? And he says I don't know. But she says I get the impression that you're single, single, long time signal yes because of the things he's got in his head.
Speaker 1:Wasn't he going out with a vet? The vet he was, but I don't know if that was recent, recent once you're annoyed with him about the vet, yeah, but that's later, because obviously I think that they'd had something and he'd frozen her out. Oh, okay, and then it sort of happens again, right, okay. So yeah, why does he think he's single, as he's got a bar and he's got good hair? He says, how do you know I'm single, single. And she starts listing furniture that he's got, like a unicycle, a punch bag With drums, and then she talks about his line of sleeping with the owner. She thinks it's not very good as well. So it's not a very good line. No, but it works. If somebody's offering her a free beer, maybe that works as well. You're at least going to go and take up the beer, if nothing else. So Ashley knows it's a move yeah and she's up for it.
Speaker 1:So they go back to the house and then he remembers the procedure. It's a bit late once he remembers the procedure, though, because they're on the bed rolling around a bit and then the pain hits, yeah, and then so he keeps trying to put her off, saying that it'd be better sober, and he's taking advantage, and she's like no, no, it's fine, it's fine, I give consent. And then he has to race off and shower yeah, cold shower on the offending article, and she's completely confused by it all, as she would be. But that was really good, that last shot, wasn't it? You had the split to show both of it the action and the end titles. She's like what's happened? I don't understand what's happened. Basically, he's in agony at the moment so he's not really worried about what she's thinking.
Speaker 1:He just wanted her to bear a lot in that episode. I think. Yeah, I don't think he's being very honest, is he he's not being honest with her? Yeah, she does find out. Yeah, yeah, she does find out from her horrible boss. I think it was a really good episode. It hit some really tough subjects within one episode, but it deals with them really well. Even though Peggy said that awful thing, it's completely believable that she would say that, of course, yes. And for the dad to come in and he's confused and everything, so he starts asking him about the car, that's completely plausible. I have got one question for you, though, amanda. Why are you single? I'm not, oh, yeah, and now it's time for everybody. No, your favourite, everybody's no Favourite. No, par. No, jack's favourite, everybody. No, your favourite, everybody's favourite. No, jack's favourite part. No, it's the quiz. Name two items from the sale that Ashley takes back. Well, she takes back her mattress and her bike. I'll do Okay, at the start of the episode here we go.
Speaker 2:How many?
Speaker 1:bananas are in the fruit bowl. I'm making fun. How many dogs were in the opening titles? No. How many bananas are in the fruit bowl? I'm making fun. How many dogs were in the opening titles? No. How many bananas were in the fruit bowl? No.
Speaker 2:This is my question?
Speaker 1:That was no, I'm not. There were two Right. What shape is the table? They ate breakfast from A round table. It's a circular table. Yes, what made-up word does Gordon use to justify the size of his Foreshortening? What made-up word does Gordon use to justify the size of his Foreshortening? Yeah, he says it's foreshortening the angle of the water. Yeah, what is the name of Gordon's business? Echo Park, aekopal. Yeah, it's a suburb in Sydney and there's also one in LA as well.
Speaker 2:In.
Speaker 1:Aekopal. What action does Linnell take with Gordon After meeting? What does she do after she meets?
Speaker 2:Gordon, she fluids with him.
Speaker 1:And then she tries to add him on Facebook. There we go. She doesn't try to, she does. How much, well, he hasn't said yes? How much does Ash's mum pay to get the mattress back? Oh, sixty dollars, wasn't it hundred? Okay oh, hang on, I've got 10 questions. No, you and you go. Oh, you didn't win, I got, I answered most of the questions.
Speaker 2:We'll amount okay, it's one of them. It's very nice.
Speaker 1:One more question yeah, but I keep telling you this one. What is Ash's mum's name? I keep telling you this, though I know. How did you know? Obviously, I watched the episode. Yeah, okay, give me a proper one then. What's the price of getting all of Ash's things back? $260. And Dinner, yeah, a nice dinner.
Speaker 1:What type of barrels is the beer? Aged in Bourbon barrels? Yep, so you've got one more for me. Do you want a hard one or an easy one? Oh man, I'm almost. Of course I'm going to take the easy one. Don't ask me silly questions.
Speaker 1:What's the journalist's order that Gordon thought was weird Cider Cider? I won that one again. Order that golden salt was weird cider cider. I won that one again. I am the winner because I win every week. You don't I edit it, I win every single week. And now it's time for geek corner. No, jingle, that wasn't jingle. No, proper jingle, come on. Come on, give me a jingle. Now it's time for it's the Corner. It's the Corner, it's the Corner of the Geek. That was quite good actually. I quite like that one. Yeah, go on, give me a fact man, okay, zach, who plays Colin yes, came to star in the show as he's owned by Kirsten Feddersen, who trains animals for a living. Well, I would have imagined he's with an animal trainer. He was so popular that Binged worked with an advertising company, thinkabelle, and an independent brewer, hop Nation, to create a non-alcoholic beer for dogs called Collins Pale Ale, which fits in with the whole theme, doesn't it? Yeah, so they advertised in targeted owners and their little furry friends to enjoy a cold one together while watching TV.
Speaker 1:So, this Pale Ale was basically a beef bone broth. I wouldn't be having one With hoppy afternoons, it was a bit of a soup really, yeah. But there was this whole advertising campaign. So street posters targeting dogs. So at dog's eye level they were scented so that the dogs would go to them. Oh right, and then the human eye level. They encouraged the dogs, dog owners, to stream Colin from accounts on Binge and to order some pale ale, colin's pale ale, and they were even given a chance to get a pack of four for free and gave an address that they could get some of this Colin's pale ale. It went a bit mad. Influencer channels they had a connected experience with Google and they had an ad experience on YouTube as well, and they filmed this interactive content with Colin. Zach and fans were invited to learn more about the puppy brew and with a click of the button they were seamlessly sent to the Hot Nation website, but without stopping what they were viewing of Saks.
Speaker 1:They could do it on their mobile and everything and, yeah, they could order on the phone and still watch. It's always a merchandise and opportunity isn't it. Oh my goodness, this is such a big one and there are posters, collins, pale Ale everywhere. So that's my one fact. I've only got one other one, okay, and that not only are the stars of the show. Don't tell me, they're married and married Married. But Harriet Dyer's sister, Madeline, also has directed one episode in each of the seasons because she's an actress director herself.
Speaker 1:Nice, get the family involved, exactly, yeah. Okay, I haven't actually got an awful lot because there's not an awful lot of information out there, but I've been reading a lot of interviews with them so this might be more anecdotal than anything else. Harriet Dyer described how she got the idea for the meet-cute. I've always been a bit entranced with the idea that people walk into posts or run out of the back of a car or something because they've seen another person they find attractive. Patrick bramble said I liked that these two people would have nothing between them, apart from that initial moment where she decided there was enough between them to flash a nipple.
Speaker 1:Bramall and Dyer teamed up on the two homegrown seasons of no Activity across 2015 and 2016. They each appeared in the show's US remake as well. Now, he was one of the main characters in the US remake. She was only in a couple of episodes, I believe, which ran for four seasons across 2017 to 2021. It was an improvised comedy that followed two detectives on a stakeout waiting for the action to unfold. It's a look of what happens when nothing happens, and the aussie version is available in the uk on bb sound player, and I did watch a couple of episodes. Yeah, yeah, I started to watch the first episode. Yeah, very good, but I ran out of time. When I say that, not because I thought it was rubbish no.
Speaker 1:I ran out of time because I really only had two days to prepare for this. Oh yes, get that violin out. Colin from Accounts began as a fun thing for the pair to write for themselves, including to act in, but without thinking that anything more would come of it. They got the name of Colin from accounts because of a real-life conversation they had. They fostered a dog for a short time and they didn't like its name. It was Minchu, which means well done, but they didn't like it.
Speaker 1:Harriet Dyer and Patrick Bramall are both Australian, but they live in Los Angeles. The show is co-produced by CBS Studios, which means it's eligible for the US Primetime Emmys, but it was filmed down under and has become an international awards juggernaut. Dyer said I think we could have written a fine comedy in America of this version. But we don't know truly what a midwest woman is. We didn't grow up with that, but we know what a queensland woman is. We know what a north shore sydney one is. We know those people and so we thought let's just go home and make it in the voices that we know, and I think that was an excellent choice. Variety reports is that until recently, cbs probably would have adapted calling from accounts with a new cast and settings for us audiences, which has generally been the case with all these shows like rake, kath and kim, the moodies and the slap.
Speaker 1:I only know one of them yeah and Davies I've Jacquie actually Sarah most UK shows as well, including Ghosts. Oh yes Jacquie they are doing that.
Speaker 1:Bramall, for example, was star writer and EP on the Australian series no Activity, and he also did the same on CBS All Access US version. But Colin from Account sparks from the chemistry between dire and bramble, which is something that's hard to replicate. It helped. The streaming had recently meant that programs like fleabag did not need to be remade, and that is the end of gig corner. Well done, thanks for joining us. We've reached the end of our episode and the end of this season. We'll be back, though when will we be back? Halloween, ooh, remember?
